AWS AppConfig
What it is
AWS AppConfig lets teams alter application behavior in production using feature flags and dynamic configuration, without redeploying code. Features can be released immediately or gradually to selected groups, including fine-grained and high-cardinality segments. AppConfig supports A/B and multivariate experiments on live traffic, including tests of feature flags, configuration values, and user experiences. LLM model settings, parameters, and prompts can also be managed as dynamic configuration and tested in variants. Configuration data can come from the hosted store, AWS Secrets Manager, Systems Manager Parameter Store, or Amazon S3. Deployments can start in the AWS Management Console, CLI, or an SDK, for workloads on EC2, Lambda containers, mobile applications, or edge devices. Monitored alarms can trigger rollback, with Amazon CloudWatch, Datadog, and Dynatrace named. PrivateLink enables private VPC access, and KMS keys can add encryption. Usage-based pricing is listed per request, configuration received, and experiment hour.
For and against
For
- Changes behavior without code redeployment
- Supports gradual, targeted rollouts
- Provides live A/B and multivariate testing
- Offers automatic rollback from monitored alarms
- Supports multiple configuration sources
Against
- Hosted configuration defaults to 2 MB
- Maximum hosted configuration size is 4 MB
- Usage-based costs vary by activity
- Requires AWS deployment methods
The verdict
AWS AppConfig combines feature flags, experiments, dynamic settings, and rollback controls for running applications. Teams should account for configuration-size limits and usage-based billing.
Who it suits
AppConfig suits teams managing production behavior across cloud, mobile, or edge workloads. It is useful for controlled rollouts, live experiments, runtime tuning, and dynamic allow-lists or block-lists.
