arXiv

What it is

arXiv is a free, open-access archive and research-sharing platform for scholarly articles. Founded in 1991, it hosts more than three million articles across eight subject areas: physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. Readers can search and retrieve full text, use advanced search, and find work across those fields. The service also supports article submission, compilation, production, web distribution, curation, and preservation, with public API access. Active subject areas offer RSS 2.0 and ATOM feeds that update daily, and users can subscribe to daily email listings of new abstracts. Registered authors can submit without a fee, though some new authors or category submissions may need an endorsement. Submissions are moderated for topical relevance and scholarly value, but are not peer-reviewed. Text submissions can be in LaTeX variants, PDF, or HTML with image files; scanned documents are not accepted. Each paper version, including rejected papers, remains part of the scientific record and may not be removed.

For and against

For

  • Free access to scholarly articles and full text
  • More than three million articles across eight subject areas
  • Advanced search and public API access
  • Daily feeds and email listings are available

Against

  • Submissions are moderated but not peer-reviewed
  • Only registered authors may submit

Who it suits

It suits readers seeking scholarly articles across multiple disciplines, along with registered authors who want to submit work without a submission fee. Researchers and developers can also use its public API, feeds, and email listings to follow new submissions.
