What it is

ares is a free, open-source multi-system emulator for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with a focus on accuracy and preservation. Its listed systems include Arcade, Atari 2600, WonderSwan, ColecoVision, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and PlayStation; some systems are marked experimental. Playback features include save states, run-ahead, rewind, and fast-forward. Pixel shaders and optional color correction can alter display output to emulate characteristics of original screens. Virtual Game-Pads let users configure controls once and adapt them for each emulated system. The project also includes simple debugging tools, such as trace logging, to support development of original software for supported systems. Its hiro framework provides a native-style interface through WinAPI on Windows, Cocoa on macOS, and GTK2 or GTK3 on POSIX platforms. Windows builds support Windows 7 or higher, while macOS binaries require Catalina 10.15 and are universal for Intel and Apple Silicon. For Linux, the project prefers compiling from source and links to third-party packages rather than offering official binaries. The source code uses the ISC license. Android is not supported, and a BIOS is required.

For and against

For

  • Supports save states, rewind, and fast-forward.
  • Offers pixel shaders and optional color correction.
  • Virtual Game-Pads adapt configured controls to different systems.
  • Windows and macOS builds have stated platform support.

Against

  • Some listed systems are experimental.
  • Linux users are directed to source builds or third-party packages.
  • Android is not supported.
  • A BIOS is required.

The verdict

ares pairs a broad listed system range with playback, display, and control options. Check experimental status and platform requirements, including the BIOS requirement, before choosing it.

Who it suits

ares suits users looking for a desktop emulator across its listed systems, as well as developers creating original software for supported systems. Linux users should be prepared to compile from source or use third-party packages.
