Apache Kudu
What it is
Apache Kudu is a free, open source distributed storage engine for analytics on rapidly changing data. It combines fast inserts and updates with efficient columnar scans in one storage layer. Tables use strongly typed columns and primary keys, allowing clients to read, update, or delete rows by key with millisecond-scale individual-row access. Java, C++, and Python APIs are available, along with integrations such as Apache Impala, Apache NiFi, Apache Spark SQL, and Presto. Kudu runs as a self-hosted service on Linux and stores data in the Linux filesystem, with ext4 or XFS recommended for storage directories. Raft replicates tablet operations, and strict snapshot consistency is available to clients requiring it. Security features include Kerberos, TLS for authenticated internal connections, and Apache Ranger authorization policies. Kudu supports Parquet and streaming ingestion. It is not designed as an OLTP system and has no automatic record deletion through a time-to-live property. The listed latest release is 1.18.1.
For and against
For
- Combines updates with columnar analytical scans
- Millisecond-scale access to individual rows
- Provides Java, C++, and Python APIs
- Supports Raft replication and snapshot consistency
- Free Apache 2.0 open source
Against
- Not designed for OLTP workloads
- No automatic TTL record deletion
- Requires self-hosted deployment
- Linux filesystem storage is required
The verdict
Apache Kudu brings mutable rows and analytical scans into one open source storage layer. Its self-hosted Linux model and missing TTL deletion make deployment requirements worth reviewing first.
Who it suits
Kudu suits teams building self-hosted analytical systems for data that changes frequently. It fits environments using Linux, typed tables, primary-key access, and listed ecosystem integrations.
