Apache Calcite
What it is
Apache Calcite is a free, dynamic data management framework that supplies database-management components without providing data storage, data-processing algorithms, or metadata storage. It includes an industry-standard SQL parser, validator, and JDBC driver. Calcite represents queries as relational algebra, applies planning rules, and uses a cost model to optimize them. It can connect applications with multiple storage locations and processing engines, including by pushing computation to a source database.
Listed adapters include Arrow, Cassandra, CSV, Druid, Elasticsearch, JDBC, MongoDB, Redis, Spark, and Splunk. The JDBC driver supports local connections and remote connections using JSON over HTTP or Protobuf over HTTP. Calcite is available as source and through Maven, and can be used through an API or self-hosted. It does not own or store data, so a data source must be registered through a schema or adapter. Build prerequisites include Git and Java JDK 8u220 or later, with Java 11 preferred. The project directs users to its developers mailing list, Jira, Stack Overflow, and source code for help.
For and against
For
- Provides a SQL parser, validator, and JDBC driver
- Uses relational algebra and a cost model for optimization
- Includes adapters for varied data sources and engines
- Available as source and through Maven
Against
- Does not provide data storage or metadata storage
- Data sources must be registered through a schema or adapter
- Build prerequisites include Git and Java JDK 8u220 or later
The verdict
Calcite provides SQL and query-planning components for applications that connect to external data sources. It is a framework, not a data store, and requires source registration through a schema or adapter.
Who it suits
Calcite suits developers building applications that need SQL parsing, query planning, or mediation across data sources and processing engines. It requires users to register data sources rather than storing data itself.
