Amrita Virtual Lab
What it is
Amrita Virtual Lab offers browser-accessible laboratories for distance learning and experimentation on an internet-connected computer. Learners can use simulations, interactive animations, and remotely triggered experiments, supported by web resources, video lectures, procedures, lab manuals, quizzes, and other materials. The project says it has built 1,500 experiments and supports on-the-spot assessment. Its subjects include computer science, engineering, biotechnology and biomedical engineering, and physical and chemical sciences. Examples range from neurophysiology simulations and physics tools to a wireless sensor network lab. Teachers can monitor student progress and change instructional materials, and the platform includes experiment authoring and LMS integration. Labs are hosted for open access through the project websites, and free online and offline classes are available to students and faculty at nodal centres. The Free access plan is free under the Nodal Centre Program, with no registration fee for that program. Participating institutions must choose at least three experiments and have at least 300 students using the labs. Some Chemical Sciences questionnaire access requires a VALUE-provided user ID.
For and against
For
- Browser-accessible simulations and remote experiments
- Includes procedures, lab manuals, and quizzes
- Teachers can monitor student progress
- Free online and offline classes at nodal centres
Against
- Nodal centres must choose at least three experiments
- Nodal centres need at least 300 student users
- Chemical Sciences questionnaire requires a VALUE user ID
The verdict
Amrita Virtual Lab combines varied online experiment formats with teaching and assessment tools. Access is open, but some activities and nodal-centre participation have specific requirements.
Who it suits
It suits students, research scholars, and faculty seeking online experiments and learning materials across science and engineering subjects. Institutions considering nodal-centre participation should note the experiment and student requirements.
