What it is
Aila is Oak’s web-based AI lesson assistant for teachers creating or adapting lessons and teaching resources. A generated lesson comprises a lesson plan, slide deck, two quizzes and a worksheet, which teachers can edit and download. Teachers can also request glossaries, tasks and quizzes to supplement an Oak lesson or their own material. Adaptations can change content, reading age, geographical context, tasks or activities to suit pupils. Aila draws on Oak material created by teachers and checked by subject experts, with a focus on the English national curriculum. Its FAQ says the assistant is built to use ChatGPT-4, while Oak evaluates other models. The service is free, but limits apply to requests, lessons and resources, and fair-use limits may apply to excessive use. Aila is in beta and under active development, and Oak advises checking generated content. It does not currently create images or diagrams, and its output is weaker in some subjects, particularly STEM and modern foreign languages. Use requires a laptop or computer with internet access; mobile use is not supported.
